Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is one of the leading, longest operating fully integrated medical emergency services departments in the province. With over 100 years of success in a fully integrated model, highly effective and inspiring leadership is a primary success factor. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a proven leader in Fire and Emergency Medical Services to assume responsibility for the overall leadership and administration of the department.

Under the general direction of the Director of Community Services, the Chief of Fire and Emergency Services is accountable for the overall direction of the Department. The Chief is responsible for continuous coordination, development, training, and improvement of all departmental services while exercising a high degree of independent action, judgement and initiative on administrative, operational, technical matters, problems and decisions in the delivery of fire/rescue services, ambulance services, fire prevention, and the emergency management program. The Chief acts as the Director of Emergency Management and coordinates all emergency agencies and other resources in the event of a major emergency within the community.

We are looking for candidates with the following preferred qualifications:

 Extensive knowledge of firefighting and emergency medical services and the culture of this group
 A minimum of 10 years of related experience with at least 5 years of senior leadership experience
 Substantial knowledge of and experience working in a unionized environment including collective agreement negotiations and managing the union/management relationship
 An understanding of and experience working in a large and complex organization
 Proven leadership skills with the ability to lead and motivate staff at all levels of the organization to create an effective and cohesive team
 Highly developed interpersonal skills including active listening and the ability to clearly communicate
 Adaptable to change and ability to lead others through that change
 Ability to evaluate actions for risk/reward, take action and be accountable for the outcomes.
 Ability to work closely with staff, Senior Management, Council, the public, and other jurisdictions within the province.
 Exceptional public speaking skills
 Keen political situational awareness
 Ability to communicate complex information to diverse groups and create understanding
 Ability to make decisions on allocation of resources within budget approvals
 Highly developed budgeting skills
 Ability to make decisions around manning, safe and efficient delivery of fire, rescue and EMS services to the community
 Ability to make decisions on how to provide effective and efficient approaches to resource management throughout the department to provide cost effective service delivery, customer satisfaction and risk management to meet service levels
 ICS 300 certified and experience in emergency management
 Emergency service dispatching technology and process familiarity desired
 Negotiation and contract management skills required
 Paramedic/EMT certification and experience is desired
