DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF - Operations

The Stony Plain Fire Department is a progressive, composite department consisting of 7 Career and 43 Paid On Call Firefighters. Responding to over 500 calls per year, the team provides highly technical and diverse services; delivering the best possible fire protection and safety service, helping to minimize the loss of life and property through education, prevention, preparedness, and response.

We are currently seeking a permanent full time, experienced and dedicated Deputy Chief of Operations. Reporting to the Fire Chief, this position is accountable for providing fire suppression / rescue activities, along with maintaining inventories, purchasing equipment and supplies, and coordinating the department’s inspection and fire prevention program. This position will work closely with the Deputy Chief of Training to accomplish required tasks, and will actively respond to fire calls, occasionally acting as Incident Commander.

The ideal candidate will possess sound judgement and strong leadership skills, along with a minimum of 3 years’ experience as an Officer within a recognized Alberta Fire Department. As this position supervises Paid On Call and Career Firefighters, demonstrated experience working with and leading a composite Fire Department staff under a variety of conditions is essential. Successful applicants will be physically fit, will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and will be highly competent in exercising the use of tact and diplomacy when handling delicate, confidential, and/or politically sensitive matters. In addition, successful applicants will hold the following certifications (or equivalent): NFPA 1001 level 2, NFPA 1041 Part 1 level 2, NFPA 1002 Pump and Aerial Operator, ICS300, NFPA 1021 level 2, Alberta Fire SCO Insp. 2 / Invest. 1, and an Alberta Class 3 drivers license with Q endorsement.

The Town offers an excellent 100% employer paid Health Benefit package and membership under the Local Authorities Pension Plan. Based on a 40 hour work week, the salary range for this position is $90,103 - $114,636 per annum. The successful candidates must also be willing to participate in the after hour training sessions, emergency responses and “on call” scheduled on a rotational basis. The successful candidate must reside within the Town limits.
